Nudes, Musicians, and Other Figures Populate America Martin’s New Paintings at Joanne Artman Gallery

Her hometown of Los Angeles, and the vibrant diversity of its population, moves her. When about town, she takes mental snapshots of the people she sees all around her, and then transfers the sights stored in her head onto paper and canvas. She also paints people she knows, transforming both strangers and acquaintances alike into the blocky, heavily outlined, flattened figures populating her compositions. A selection of her most recent paintings—featuring such enduring motifs as female nudes, musicians, and portraits of indigenous peoples—comprise her new exhibition.

Last month, while on location for a home tour photo shoot in Fort Worth, I was introduced to the art of America Martin. She is very well known, especially on the West Coast, but I had not seen her work until now. I'm a huge Picasso fan and Martin's work is very closely aligned with his - although Martin seems to have a kinder gaze when it comes to her subject. Her work also invokes the art of Matisse and Fernand Léger. Martin is inspired by the female form. Her subjects are vibrant, self-possessed, thoughtful women who seem to leap off the canvas. The more I see her work, the more enchanted I become.

America’s Women: New Female Forms by America Martin

Persephone, daughter of Zeus and Demeter, is known in Greek mythology as the queen of the underworld; a sad fate that she was handed after being abducted by Hades. Often pictured carrying grain, she was known to emerge with the burgeoning of new vegetation each harvest season; she’s now associated with springtime. It’s this vision of the Greek goddess that has inspired L.A.-based artist America Martin, in a rich new series paintings picturing valiant women. “This new series is an ode to spring, to Persephone, when she emerges from the shadows of the underworld, and with her grace makes the flowers bloom, the fruit grow and the winter fade away,” Martin explains. Pursuing her propensity for melding historical references with a bold contemporary style, she achieves vivid success in these new works, which are on view now at Mark Gallery.
